The Mevlevi Order is an order of Sufism that was founded in the late 13th century in Konya. The followers are commonly called dervish and are particularly known for their whirling dances (sema) that they perform as a devotional act to God (dhikir). The sema represents a man’s spiritual ascent through mind and love to reach perfection. The programme commences with classical Turkish music performed by a traditional orchestra followed by the dancing ceremony (sema) in a beautifully restored 550 year old hamam.
